Social Justice

Every society has socially backward sections of people such as religious minorities, linguistic minorities and sexual minorities. India has an additional category called caste oppressed people. They are often subject to ostracization, attacks, rapes and murders. It is everyone’s responsibility to include every section of society in a country’s progress. Most of the civil unrest and wars arise due to the non-inclusive nature of societies. To resolve this, India must expand its social justice policies to private/ corporate sector too. Since reservation would amount to forceful interference in businesses, government can set minimum criteria (akin to reservation numbers in the state) for equal opportunities employment. The companies that do not follow the system can be taxed heavily and can name the tax as social justice tax. This way the corporate would compete to prove...

Minority affairs

Disability-discrimination.jpgWhen I was an eight year old, our family resided in Salem. I had a very close friend named Mukundan. His family and mine were very close. We still remember the days when we were ROFL while we were watching ‘Annamalai’ movie - ‘paambu…’ comedy. He used to be the topper in my class every time and I would always be the second. During a midterm test, our ranks got reversed. He felt very sad and refused to eat his lunch and he was crying all the way when we left our school. I consoled him and I promised him that I will not be a topper next time. Though this is not relevant to the topic, I wrote to establish that as children, we are naturally compassionate. It is the adulthood or its influence that instils venom named hate into our souls and prevents us from being compassionate.

We, as adults, fail to empathize with others in our day to day life. Our disregard for linguistic minorities can be...

Much Ado about “Good Old Days”

Untitled.pngWe all know that change is the only constant force in our universe. Many of us could not resist to changes as readily as some of us do thereby, arises the much clichéd phrase, “good old days.” Yes, I agree that we miss the old style of living. We must also appreciate the modern style of living. In the modern world, man has become flexible enough to address complex issues he faces. I am a person who believes modernity is not as bad as it is interpreted. This blog highlights some of the issues in which many of us including me think olden days were better than the present when it is actually not.

Human beings give a lot of importance to health. In most languages, enquiring after someone is a common form of greeting an individual. We often hear that our ancestors lead a healthy life. This notion could be easily defeated by a fact that India’s life expectancy has almost doubled since...

End Rape! Stop Rapists!

A new spell of rape incidents in this month (June 2014) in Indian states of UP, TN, and MP has one again sent alarm signals against several ailments that our society suffers. Rape incidents in India, in my opinion, is a result of male dominance that has prevailed in our society. However, there are several additional factors such as caste discrimination, lack of awareness and empowerment among women and children, societal rejection of rape victims. This piece of writing highlights the plight of Indian women and children.

First, let us analyze Uttar Pradesh’ Badaum incident where two teenagers were gangraped by (the so-called) upper caste men. Brinda Karat in her article related to the incident, ‘Endless wait for Justice’ (The Hindu, June 6, 2014) mentions that in many villages, men think that raping a women of lower caste is an inherited right they possess. Gangrape incident in UP is a...

Horrible…y Good Bosses

boss.jpg
It was a rainy morning at Amrita University where I studied Engineering. I was watching a movie named ‘Swimming with Sharks’ in the hostel. It was a story about a bad boss abusing his subordinate, naive writer. I wondered how my future bosses would be! I had got placed in a British company for its Qatar operations. I had a great expectation about my first job. I expected to work in a skyscraper and enjoying a great life there. My friends, Navin and Vishnu (who were also hired by the company) travelled together with lots of hope about our careers. We finally reached Doha on July 7, 2007 (7-7-07). This was the first time I lived away from parents.

My project was called RLOC, the largest Olefins manufacturing plant in the world. My boss’ name was Mr. Shetty, a Project Manager. It was a new project and they had a senior planning engineer named Ajay. The plan was to promote him as a site...
